Basic Samba configuration,

What is Samba?

Samba is software that can be run on a platform other than Microsoft Windows, for example, UNIX, Linux, IBM System 390, OpenVMS, and other operating systems. Samba uses the TCP/IP protocol that is installed on the host server. When correctly configured, it allows that host to interact with a Microsoft Windows client or server as if it is a Windows file and print server.

Step by step To install and configure the Samba on linux:

Download and install the below packages in Linux Box:

samba-client-3.0.9-1.3E.15
samba-3.0.9-1.3E.15
samba-swat-3.0.9-1.3E.15
samba-common-3.0.9-1.3E.15

#vi /etc/samba/smb.conf
####Simple Share conf########
[My Share]
comment = SysAdmin Share
path = /share
public = yes
writable = yes

save the file using the

:wq

press enter

#/etc/init.d/smb start
#chkconfig smb on

Then you can access the linux file from the windows machine.

Njoy......
